Child Pornography and Abuse: Guilt and Suicide

Law and justice finally extended their hands towards sex offenders and child predators. There has been a significant increase of arrests, prosecution, and convictions for those guilty of the crime. Child exploitation, without a doubt is a very serious offense. But I wonder why there is not much attention given to it up until recently.

The kind of anonymity and concealment the web provides for people who commit these crimes leads them to think they can never be caught. However, the scenario is very different today. Because of the rapid increase of American children subjected to pornography, US state and federal authorities have held a tighter grip to put culprits behind bars.

The kind of anonymity and concealment the web provides for people who commit these crimes leads them to think they can never be caught. However, the scenario is very different today. Because of the rapid increase of American children subjected to pornography, US state and federal authorities have held a tighter grip to put culprits behind bars.

But when it comes to the kind and class of people who are convicted, there’s a bit of surprise here. Mostly we think sex offenders have previous criminal records or convictions and that’s no surprise. We often feel otherwise when someone is an established professional and a well-known career individual.

Richard Dyde is a successful 47 year old doctor of neuroscience. He got his PhD in England but settled in Toronto’s York University to work for the Vision Research. But when police accused him and 50 other persons of mutually exchanging images and videos of child pornography, he ended up giving up not only his career but his life as well.

Dyde committed suicide probably because of embarrassment and guilt. The consequences were too much to bear.

The point here is that classes of child offenders these days aren’t exclusively made up of natural-born criminals. There are even some who turn out to be the unlikeliest of suspects and it hurts even more for the victims and relatives if that someone is close, related, or acquainted to the child.

In the end, no matter what kind of abuse is inflicted to the child, it all boils down to the fact that committing it is very gruesome. Some perpetrators do not even have the strength to accept the consequences and just settle on ending their own lives.
