The Risk of Children Watching the News

The news is not always about finding new information around us. Though we keep up with the rest of the world by simply watching news in television, the same can cause several negative effects for children and teenagers. Parents must be specifically aware of the fact that too much exposure to the news may influence the behavior and thinking of their kids.

The news is not always about finding new information around us. Though we keep up with the rest of the world by simply watching news in television, the same can cause several negative effects for children and teenagers. Parents must be specifically aware of the fact that too much exposure to the news may influence the behavior and thinking of their kids.

Try watching CNN or FOX News for a couple of hours and then list the kind of content and programs they present.  You will observe that the majority of them involve in one way or another violence, crime, politics, tensions, accidents, and disaster. There is little child-friendly news. Simply put, sensationalism sells, and the news agencies are out to make money, not just provide public service.

We therefore must agree that news is definitely a media factor that needs to be controlled. Children must be monitored and watched closely when they’re viewing. So here are some of the things you can practice as a parent in order to at least reduce the negative effects of the news:

- If possible, always watch the news with your child.

- Look forward to the kind of content they are about to view and learn how to explain it to them so that they will not get upset or be influenced by it.

- Allocate enough time to talk to them when they need to ask questions about what they see in the news. If they are left alone to interpret it by themselves, then it may negatively influence them.

- If children see disaster and violence, you have to be there to keep them assured that they are safe and protected by you.

- If you’re not always there to sit beside them as they watch news, you must have the ability to find emerging signs and effects that may be caused by what they see. If this happens, intervention is needed.

As long as there is open and constant communication between the parents and the child, there is no way for news to supply negative effects on the latter’s behavioral and psychological tendencies.
