Why Do American Teens Engage More in Sexual Relationships?

A lot of developed countries these days are seeing a good decline in the number of teens and minors engaging in premarital sex. Of course, the natural effect would be that there’ll be lesser cases of STDs and HIVs as well as unwanted pregnancies.

The case is somewhat very opposite in the United States. But who’s to blame?

According to Laura Wershler, executive director of Sexual Health Access in Alberta, Canada, much of the blame should be placed on the wrong approach towards sex education by American parents.

For instance, the comparative analysis of adolescent sexuality of Americans and Dutch has led to the conclusion that a drama campaign towards sex for teens is not as effective as we come to think of it before. What we mean is that when parents establish the notion that having sex is very dangerous and there are harmful effects, teens become more curious to do it. On the opposite side, having an open communication towards teen sex and accepting the same as part of teenage life has actually lessen the likelihood of minors engaging in sexual relationships.

But I have to keep the record straight – telling minors to go have sex is not what I’m advocating. Dutch and Americans belong to different cultures and applying the same principle may not be very feasible. It may even lead to child molestation and exploitation.

Nevertheless, something must be done to lessen the likelihood of teen sex in the country and whatever campaign families are doing, it isn’t really working right now. Let’s do something else perhaps.
